NOISE (a musical)

Book, Music & Lyrics by César Alvarez. Directed by Sarah Benson.
July 27 - 30, 2023

This event occurred as part of the 23/24 Hop Original season. This is an archived view.

Society is broken. Let's fix it with music, like right now...in this musical.

23/24 Hop Original

A bunch of musicians decide that society is broken, and since music is the blueprint for everything, they set out to make music that models a society they actually want to live in.

As the show unravels into a dreamlike explosion of song and dance, the audience steps into a creative role. NOISE is a participatory theatrical celebration that sings across the history of music, and into the future, in a collective effort to invent a better world.

The brainchild of writer/composer César Alvarez (www.cesaralvarez.net), NOISE is directed by Sarah Benson and created by an interdisciplinary team of collaborators. The Hop brings this brilliant, open-hearted production to life, presented as a special engagement at Northern Stage.

It's an incisive and joyful new work. A musical-in-the-making. And kind of a party.

Produced and Commissioned by the Hopkins Center for the Arts at Dartmouth with support from Northern Stage.
NOISE was previously commissioned by The Public Theater and Playwrights Horizons Theater School/NYU and developed with Andrew Neisler. Generously supported by the National Endowment for the Arts Challenge Grant Fund.

Please Note: Synthetic fog and strobe lights are used during this performance.

From the Hopkins Center's Executive Director

The Hop is a hub for artistic innovation where Dartmouth faculty and resident artists gather to experiment and create original productions like César Alvarez's NOISE that asks questions about the power of the arts to make a better world, and even challenges our ideas of what makes a musical. This first collaboration with Northern Stage gives us the opportunity to connect more deeply with our Upper Valley community and build new ways to sustain those connections. Northern Stage has been a steadfast partner in bringing this bold, dynamic production to life and to sharing it with our community. We hope this exciting partnership will be the first
of many.
